Title: Israel Surrounds Gaza Strip Leader's Residence in Ongoing Middle East Conflict

Amidst the ongoing Middle East conflict, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that the Israeli army has encircled the residence of the Hamas leader in Gaza Strip, Jihia al-Sinwar .

The Israeli forces have reportedly expanded their attacks in the Gaza Strip, including the principal city in the southern part of the coastal enclave, which is considered a stronghold for Hamas . In light of this, experts theorize that Hamas's leadership and a significant number of Hamas members might be holed up in the extensive network of tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip .

Jihia al-Sinwar has a tumultuous past. In 1988, al-Sinwar was convicted by Israel for the murder of four suspected collaborators and two Israeli soldiers. After a lengthy imprisonment of more than two decades, al-Sinwar was released in 2011 as part of an exchange for the Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit who was kidnapped in the Gaza Strip . Later, al-Sinwar ascended to the position of head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip in 2017 .

Since October 7, 2022, Sinwar has been on Israel's hit list following a massacre by Hamas and other groups in the Israeli border area, resulting in around 1,200 fatalities .

  • In a turn of events, Jihia al-Sinwar's brother, Yahya Sinwar, was killed by Israeli forces on October 16, 2024, in a firefight in the southern Gaza Strip . Subsequently, a ceremony marked the release of eight hostages by Hamas next to the destroyed house of Jihia al-Sinwar on January 30, 2025 .
  • The conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has been rife with humanitarian crises and potential for escalation. Despite a fragile ceasefire since January 19, 2025, tensions remain high. On January 21, 2025, Israel conducted a large-scale operation in Jenin refugee camp which expanded to other areas in the West Bank, leading to significant loss of life, leveling of residential buildings, and displacement of Palestinians .
