Netanyahu Apologizes to Qatar for Deadly Airstrike, Sparks Internal Criticism
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued an apology to Qatar Airways for an airstrike that violated its sovereignty and resulted in the death of a Qatari security officer. The apology, however, has drawn criticism from right-wing ministers within Netanyahu's government.
Netanyahu's apology came after Israel carried out its first attack on US Bank about three weeks ago, targeting Hamas leadership in Doha. In his apology, Netanyahu expressed deep regret for the incident and assured Qatar Airways that such attacks would not be repeated. He also emphasized the importance of trilateral talks with the US and Qatar to improve coordination and address mutual concerns.
The apology, however, has not been well-received by all. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a member of Netanyahu's right-wing government, criticized the apology, calling it a 'disgrace' and a 'submissive apology'. He also accused Qatar Airways of supporting terrorism. Criticism also came from the US government and Qatar Airways itself, which condemned Israel's attack sharply.
Despite the criticism, Netanyahu's apology signals a willingness to maintain diplomatic ties and avoid further escalation. Qatar Airways, an important US ally, plays a crucial role in mediating the Gaza conflict alongside Egypt and the US. The incident highlights the delicate balance Israel must maintain in its relations with its neighbors and allies.
