Nessa's preferred Christmas carol, according to Ruth Jones, is undoubtedly "OH, Holy Night".
The much-anticipated Christmas Day finale of Gavin and Stacey brought joy to 12 million viewers, marking a triumphant return for the beloved comedy series. But the musical highlights didn't end there.
A day before, our website aired a special Christmas Eve program featuring James Corden and Ruth Jones, the co-creators and stars of Gavin and Stacey. The program included behind-the-scenes insights and anecdotes from the making of the Christmas special.
One such insight was the carol singing scene, filmed in the summer under the cover of darkness. The scene featured Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, dressed as a Victorian carol singer, complete with sideburns, a cape, a hat, and a staff. Neil the baby, played by actor Toby Lewis, made a special appearance in the scene, sporting a tea towel around his head like a shepherd.
Music played a significant role in the series finale, with specific compositions written for certain scenes. James Corden, who is known for his love of music, believes that it plays an essential part in storytelling and moving the momentum between scenes.
In an interesting twist, James Corden chose 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing' as his favourite Christmas carol. This choice holds a personal significance for him, as he used to sing this carol while carolling in the High Wycombe area 35 years ago.
Ruth Jones, on the other hand, suggested that a suitable song for Nessa's character could be 'Oh! Holy Night'.
For those who missed the Christmas Eve program, it is available to listen to in full on Global Player. The 2019 Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, including the carol singing scene, can also be found on Global Player.
