Nepal Appoints Sushila Karki as Interim Prime Minister Following Political Unrest

Sushila Karki was appointed as Nepal's interim prime minister last week, marking a significant milestone in the country's political history as she becomes the first woman to hold the position. The appointment came following negotiations between Nepal's President Ramchandra Paudel, Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, and the leaders of the protests that led to the resignation of K.P. Sharma Oli.

The political unrest in Nepal, which left at least 72 people dead and more than 2,100 injured, has been identified as increasing risks to the country's economic and fiscal outlook. According to rating firm Fitch, the unrest may also pressure Nepal's credit metrics, as stated on Friday. Losses from the damage could reach $1 billion to $1.5 billion, according to Kulman Ghising, minister for energy, physical infrastructure, transport, and urban development.

Arson and vandalism caused extensive damage to private and public property, including the prime minister's office, the Supreme Court, and the parliament. A Supreme Court official reported that most court structures, documents, and IT systems were destroyed during the unrest, necessitating some hearings to take place in tents.

Sushila Karki pledged to fight corruption, create jobs, and raise living standards. She stated that the government's focus is on creating employment, raising the quality of life, and increasing transparency in its work. Karki spoke on Nepal's national day, marking the 10th anniversary of the proclamation of the constitution, and emphasised the need for unity and peace in the country.

Police spokesperson Binod Ghimire disclosed that officers have received over 30,000 emails containing videos, photographs, and other documents to help investigate the violence. Ghising appealed to Nepalis at home and abroad to contribute to the reconstruction following his visit to public buildings set ablaze in Kathmandu.

The protests were triggered by frustration over growing corruption and other failings, according to Sushila Karki. The political unrest in Nepal is considered to risk the country's economic outlook and credit metrics, according to Fitch. With the appointment of Sushila Karki as interim Prime Minister, the focus now turns to the parliamentary elections scheduled for March 5, and the steps the interim government will take to address the challenges facing the nation.
