Neo-Nazi demonstrators, with faces concealed, engage in violent clashes during a protest in Friedrichshain.
In a shocking turn of events, a group of twelve neo-Nazis, aged between 17 and 46, launched a violent attack on two young journalists at Ostkreuz station in Berlin on a late Sunday evening in July 2022. The attack, which took place around 16:10, was preceded by a threatening photo published by the group, depicting them in front of a wall daubed with a message claiming the neighbourhood as their own.
The perpetrators, who had travelled by regional train from Bautzen, Saxony, where they had participated in a right-wing extremist march against Christopher Street Day (CSD), were linked to neo-Nazi groups such as "Deutsche Jugend Voran" (DJV), "Berliner Jugend," and "Deutsche Patrioten Voran." These groups are known for their repeated presence at right-wing events in Berlin and Brandenburg.
The attack, which included punches, kicks, pepper spray, brass knuckles, and batons, left three people injured severely enough to require an ambulance. One of the victims was a policewoman. This incident marked the first right-wing extremist violence in Friedrichshain for a decade.
The police are currently seeking witnesses for the attack, as any information could be crucial to support the ongoing investigation. It is worth noting that this is not the first incident of right-wing activity in the district. On June 6, a group of anti-fascist demonstrators were attacked by 15-20 masked right-wing radicals at Denn's supermarket in Ostkreuz.
The Berlin police are investigating this attack, and the public's cooperation is essential in bringing those responsible to justice. If you have any information or witnessed the attack at Ostkreuz in July 2022, contacting the Berlin police would be crucial to support the ongoing investigation.
It is important to remember that such acts of violence have no place in our society. The targeting of journalists, who play a vital role in upholding the principles of democracy and freedom of speech, is particularly abhorrent. Let us stand together against hatred and intolerance, and work towards a society where such incidents are a thing of the past.
