Neighbors' tragic confrontation leaves one woman dead and Pennsylvania state troopers wounded in a shooting incident; the alleged assailant has been identified as deceased by authorities.
In a shocking turn of events, a shooting incident occurred some 163 miles north of Philadelphia on Thursday. The community of Thompson, known for its peacefulness, was rocked by an incident comparable to nothing before.
The tragedy began when Carmine Faino, a 61-year-old man, shot and killed his neighbour, Lori Wasko, in rural Pennsylvania. Faino did not comply with demands and was armed with a rifle. He later ambushed responding state troopers, Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, wounding both of them.
The troopers, Perechinsky and Jenkins, are currently in stable condition with serious injuries. Trooper Perechinsky, in a heroic act, applied a tourniquet to Trooper Jenkins after they were shot. They were flown to hospitals for medical care.
Faino also fired at police vehicles and at an SUV operated by a responding emergency worker, who was injured when his vehicle veered off the roadway. Faino was ultimately shot and killed during the incident, according to a state police statement.
Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris has stated that investigators are examining Faino's history to understand potential motives, but no official explanation has been provided at this time. The call to police was made by Wasko’s boyfriend reporting shots fired and a welfare check, but no motive has been established as of the latest reports.
In a commendable act, Trooper Perechinsky also commandeered a tractor-trailer to block the roadway and prevent further incidents. The community, particularly Erika Mills who lives less than a mile from where the shootings took place, described the day as terrifying.
As the investigation continues, the motive behind Faino’s actions remains under investigation, with no official explanation provided by law enforcement at this time.
