"They'll Swallow It" - Söder Confident Neighboring Countries Will Accept Tightened Asylum Policy
Neighbors' Consensus Effectively Endorsed by Soder in Asylum Dispute Resolution
Markus Söder, the Bavarian Minister-President, exhibits confidence that Germany's neighboring countries will eventually acquiesce to the hardened border controls and rejections. In an interview with "Bild am Sonntag," Söder expresses optimism, stating, "I'm convinced that the European neighbors will swallow it in the end." Conversations with neighboring countries about the specifics are set on the near horizon.
Politicking and Calls for Cooperation: Merz Speaks Out Against Solo German Action
With Chancellor Friedrich Merz advocating for a course correction within the EU and the CSU leader announcing further measures against illicit immigration, tensions arise. "This is a powerful launch, but there's more to come," Söder asserts. Alongside changes in citizenship law, flights from Afghanistan will be halted, and deportations will intensify through the expulsion and expansion of safe countries of origin.
Police Reports - 365 Illegal Entries in Two Days
According to initial reports from "Bild am Sonntag," 19 refugees were turned away despite asylum requests at the German borders on Thursday and Friday, following the decision by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. The Federal Police documented 365 illegal entries across both days and rejected 286 migrants. Common reasons included a lack of visas or authentic documents, counterfeited documents, entry bans, as well as the arrest of 14 people traffickers, the execution of 48 open arrest warrants, and nabbing 9 individuals from extremist or Islamist factions at the border.
Tightened Controls and First Refusals
Since mid-week, the Federal Police have been enforcing Dobrindt's order to reject most asylum seekers at the border checkpoints. "Our colleagues will reject every asylum and protection seeker, with the exception of pregnant women, sick people, and unaccompanied minors," states Andreas Roßkopf, head of the Police Union (GdP), to "Bild" news outlet. The instruction from the Federal Interior Minister is binding for border officers, and the legal responsibility for the measures rests entirely with the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
