Neighbor allegedly murders each other and subsequently ambushes and fires upon two state officers on a Pennsylvania highway, according to authorities' statements.
In a tragic turn of events, a shooting incident took place near State Route 171 in Thompson Township, Pennsylvania, on Thursday. The incident claimed the life of a neighbor, 57-year-old Laurie Wasko, and left two Pennsylvania state troopers, Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, injured.
Trooper Perechinsky, who has been a trooper for six years, and Trooper Jenkins, who has served for 10 years, were ambushed by the suspect, 61-year-old Carmine Faino. Faino opened fire on the troopers with a semiautomatic rifle, injuring them with gunshot wounds. An emergency medical technician (EMT) who responded was also injured when Faino shot at their vehicle, causing it to crash.
During the incident, Trooper Perechinsky displayed remarkable bravery. Despite being injured with two gunshot wounds, he placed a tourniquet on his fellow trooper's arms. His actions were praised by Gov. Josh Shapiro, who described him as a "real hero in the community."
The district attorney's office is conducting a use of force investigation, and the troopers have been put on leave pending the results. Both injured troopers were airlifted to a local hospital and were reported to be in stable condition as of Thursday night.
Faino, who was sitting on a propane tank, raised concerns that he might have intended to use it as an improvised explosive device. After negotiations by a special Emergency Response Team, Faino was ultimately shot and killed by law enforcement. The motive for Faino’s attack and the killing of his neighbor, Wasko, remains unclear, with police investigating his background to understand the reasons behind the violence.
Gov. Shapiro visited both injured troopers, expressing his support and admiration for their bravery. He also commended Trooper Perechinsky for his heroic actions during the incident. The community described the event as shocking and unprecedented in the generally quiet rural town.
