Negotiations on the takeover of the museum by the district

The talks about handing over the Kurt Tucholsky Literature Museum in Rheinsberg to the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district are set to kick off at the start of the new year. Following the council's approval on Monday evening, the district spokesperson, Britta Avantario, confirmed they'd initiate the takeover as soon as possible. The Rheinsberg town officials were unreachable for comment.

The district aims to secure the museum with academic oversight. In April, they offered Rheinsberg the option to assume the museum's sponsorship. To facilitate negotiations, the city delayed its budget security concept and prolonged Museum Director Peter Böthig's contract until March's end.

Deputy Mayor Norman Geist mentioned that the museum's high cost was a significant concern for Rheinsberg. Despite supporting funds (65,000 euros from the state and 15,000 euros from the district), the town still faced a potential deficit of approximately 241,000 euros in 2023.

The discussions will also address the museum's substantial collection, valued at approximately half a million euros and currently owned by Rheinsberg. A possible solution is a short-term loan agreement.

The German Cultural Council added the museum to their Red List of threatened cultural institutions. In support of the takeover, Brandenburg's Ministry of Culture commits to preserving the globally unique Tucholsky Museum under academic management. State Secretary for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) backs the district's takeover, stating it offers valuable insights into Tucholsky's influential legacy as a writer and intellectual.
