Caren Miosga's show on ARD discusses the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. Sophie von der Tann, ARD's Israel correspondent, reports on a ballistic missile attack on southern Tel Aviv, causing substantial damage. Although Israel's air defense system is effective in many areas, it's not foolproof, causing concern among citizens. Nevertheless, support for the government's actions against Iran remains among many Israelis.
Guido Steinberg, a specialist on Iran, asserts that the Iranians haven't targeted residential areas with rockets, but their accuracy is inferior to Israel's. He hints at Tehran's weakened position, attributing it to the loss of allies like Syria and the diminished power of affiliated organizations in recent years.
Although Iran lacks advanced combat aircraft due to US sanctions, Iran's rockets can inflict heavy damage in the right circumstances. Steinberg notes, "The rockets are still dangerous. I've seen them at the Revolutionary Guard, and some have warheads of 750 kilograms, which can devastate a building."
Iran's technological inferiority notwithstanding, Iran remains a formidable threat, says Steinberg. Iran has thousands of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones at its disposal. Many components of these weapons are German-made, as German intelligence agencies have revealed in the past.
The success of Israel's attacks on Iran's nuclear program is uncertain, according to Steinberg. Deep underground facilities and a lack of adequate weapons and aircraft make it challenging for Israel to target them effectively. Israel had sought American intervention in recent months to address this issue.
The future of the Middle East is uncertain, with nuclear talks between Iran and the USA having stalled in the past. Steinberg believes that resumption of negotiations is possible, as the Trump administration seeks a deal. However, Israel opposes negotiations at present. Trump is eager to avoid conflict, makers Steve Pleitgen and Guido Steinberg agreed.
Steinberg suggests that peace negotiations could commence within the next two to three weeks. The USA’s role remains crucial in this delicate situation, as they may provide a platform for talks and even mediate between the two nations.

The Commission has also been consulted on the draft resolution about the European Union's involvement in the politics surrounding war-and-conflicts in Central and Eastern Europe, as general-news reports suggest. Interestingly, Guido Steinberg, a specialist on Iran, hints that peace talks between Israel and Iran could potentially begin within the next two to three weeks, given the USA's crucial role in mediating the process.
