Coalition Talks Final Hours: Germany's New Government on the Horizon

Negotiations among coalitions said to be near completion - Negotiations among coalitions appearing to reach a conclusive stage

Get ready for some big political changes! With just hours to go, the leadership of CDU, CSU, and SPD have gathered at the CDU headquarters in Berlin for the final round of coalition talks. As reported by deputy CDU chairwoman Karin Prien, "We're on the home stretch, and I'm optimistic that we'll reach a good outcome today."

MP Thorsten Frei of the Union faction in the Bundestag confirmed the deal would likely be sealed today, and leading SPD politicians, including Matthias Miersch, echoed these sentiments.

The overall mood is optimistic, with statements from CSU leader Markus Söder and SPD deputy chairwoman Anke Rehlinger indicating the final steps are within reach. Still, a few sticking points remain to be clarified.

Major parties in the negotiation noted the international situation and trade policies in the US, particularly US tariffs, put extra pressure on them to secure an agreement. The new German government, led by Merz, aims to counter the turmoil with lower corporate taxes, less bureaucracy, and reduced energy prices.

A consensus between CDU, CSU, and SPD is essential, considering the alternative government possibilities are limited. Black-Green would not have a majority, and cooperation with AfD is out of the question for the Union.

The new government formation is expected to take place sometime before May 7, potentially in the first week of the month. If an agreement with the Union is reached, the SPD plans to hold a digital member vote within ten days.

Stay tuned as we continue to follow the developments of the coalition talks. The future of Germany is about to change!
