The German police union (GdP) has raised concerns about the condition of police facilities and service vehicles across the country, stating that current investments from the federal government are insufficient to meet the necessary upgrades.

According to the union, the challenges faced by police facilities include outdated and inadequate infrastructure, such as malfunctioning heating systems, mold and pest infestations, leaking ceilings, and generally unhealthy conditions in police stations. The service vehicles, described as "disgraceful" by the GdP, are also a cause for concern, with numerous defects that compromise the safety and well-being of law enforcement personnel.

Husgen, the representative of the German police union, has lamented the current state of police facilities in Germany, stating that they are in a state of dilapidation. The condition of these service vehicles, he believes, does not reflect well on the police and is embarrassing and humiliating for officers who must use them.

To address these issues, the GdP is urging the allocation of more resources for renovating police stations and upgrading service vehicles. This includes fixing heating, cooling, and sanitation facilities, addressing mold and pest issues, repairing leaking structures, and modernizing service vehicles to improve functionality and officer morale.

Given the rising energy prices and the push for energy efficiency, improving heating and cooling systems in a cost-effective and sustainable way is crucial. The investment backlog for police facilities in Germany is in the double-digit billions, highlighting the urgency of these improvements.

Husgen has also called for federalism to be rolled back in certain areas, such as digitization, to ensure a functioning police force. He has urged the federal government to provide more support to the states to address the current state of police facilities and service vehicles.

In summary, the primary challenges are poor physical conditions in police stations, outdated heating and cooling infrastructure, and inadequate service vehicles. The proposed solutions center on increased government funding specifically targeted at urgent renovations and new equipment purchases to create healthier, safer, and more effective law enforcement environments.

  1. The German police union (GdP) has advocated for a community policy that includes vocational training and resource allocation, focusing on upgrading police stations and service vehicles, as part of general news discussions on policy-and-legislation and politics.
  2. Amid concerns about the current state of police facilities and service vehicles in Germany, the GdP has proposed vocational training programs to modernize police stations, addressing challenges such as incorrect heating systems, mold, leaking ceilings, and outdated service vehicles, with a push for cost-effective, sustainable energy solutions and federalism reform in certain areas to ensure a functioning police force.
