Negative Reception for the CGI Lion in the Latest Wicked: For Good Trailer Preview: Many Unimpressed with Digital Feline Character
Heyo there! The long-awaited trailer for The Wicked: For Good is finally here, and it's no understatement to say it's living up to the hype! As a fellow theatre enthusiast, the sequel has been high on my watch list ever since its inception, and with the grittier aesthetic, mind-blowing set design, and phenomenal vocals, For Good seems destined to deliver yet again. But not everyone seems to be jumping on the hype train.
If you're familiar with the original Wicked flick, you know the deal – CGI animals play a crucial role, and while I don't usually dig CGI visuals, I tried to put my personal qualms aside for the sake of the film. However, some fans aren't willing to be quite so accepting when it comes to the revamped character design of one iconic feline. Let's talk about the Cowardly Lion.
A sneak peek at The Wicked: For Good on various platforms gives us a better taste of the Wizard of Oz gang, who sport a distinct character design from the 1939 version. While some style choices might be more acceptable, the rookie, cutesy design of the Cowardly Lion has stirred up a bit of controversy amongst Oz purists. (Some folks just can't quit their sentimentality for Bert Lahr's eccentric human-big-cat combo!)
Critics have been vocal about their opinions, with one commenter on X questioning, "Why’d they make the lion look like a botched taxidermy?" Others have debated whether the design was AI-generated, with one viewer lamenting, "Lion looks worse than Sonic did," while another fan proclaimed, "The lion looks like he doesn't want to be there."
It seems that with any cinematic classic, there will always be room for criticism when it comes to updates and reimaginings. The Cowardly Lion's looks may not have bowled fans over completely, but let's hope the film does justice to the story when it drops in November.
In the meantime, be sure to keep an eye out for that poster editing goof in the new Wicked: For Good that sent social media into a frenzy. If you're looking for more outstanding animated designs, check out the best CGI movie moments of all time.
