RIP Carlo von Tiedemann: A Die-Hard NDR's Beloved Host

Host of NDR, Carlo von Tiedemann, has passed away. - NDR host Carlo von Tiedemann has passed away.

Say goodbye to the legendary barker of radio and television waves, Carlo von Tiedemann. Palpable sorrow sweeps through Hamburg (and across Germany) as his family broke the news of his passing at the ripe age of 81. His long-standing battle with health issues came to an end right here in Hamburg. From 1971 till the end of his days, this brilliant showman graced the public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) with a plethora of delightful TV shows, such as "Die aktuelle Schaubude," and numerous radio programs, like "Hamburg am Mittag" and "Große Freiheit."

Intendant Joachim Knuth spoke on behalf of the NDR, "Carlo von Tiedemann was the epitome of an 'NDR institution.' His effortless, spontaneous, warm-hearted charm won over countless generations, and he remained a favorite among our viewers until the very end. The NDR owes him a great deal; his loss is a massive blow. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family."

Von Tiedemann's unique charm was a result of an unstoppable stream of words, delivered with down-to-earth wit and affection. Born in 1943, as Carl Ferdinand Hanns-Joachim Franz Friedrich von Tiedemann, in Stargard, Pomerania, this media maestro endured polio as a child and later battled brain tumors. Weathering the storms, he moved to Hamburg in 1945. After an apprenticeship as a publishing salesman, he dabbled in journalism, working as a volunteer and police reporter before jetting off to Buenos Aires for three years as a foreign correspondent for the Springer empire. It wasn't until 1971 that he found his true calling at NDR, where he rubbed shoulders with legends like Victoria Voncampe and Alida Gundlach (nee Fischer), and later, Bettina Tietjen.

A heartfelt advocate for children's hospices, the mustachioed media personality also held the mantle of stadium announcer for Hamburg's football club, HSV, from 1991 to 1998. Although he faced a career setback when his show "Show und Co. mit Carlo" crumbled on ZDF in 1986, he accepted his tumble, paid off his debts over a dozen years, and focused on his family. This deeply religious man also lent his time to the Hamburg children's hospice "Sternenbrücke."
