Tales from the Microphone: NDR Legend Carlo von Tiedemann Calls it a Day
Regretful Announcement: Beloved NDR Announcer, Carlo von Tiedemann, Has Passed Away - NDR host Carlo von Tiedemann has passed away.
They're calling him an "NDR institution" for good reason. Television and radio personality Carlo von Tiedemann, aged 81, has made his final curtain call in his hometown of Hamburg. His family confirmed the sad news to the network, where Von Tiedemann spent a staggering 50 years, captivating generations with his distinctive charm.
"If there's anyone who embodies the spirit of the NDR, it's Carlo von Tiedemann," said Intendant Joachim Knuth in a heartfelt statement. "With his audacious, spontaneous, and heartfelt on-air persona, he captivated audiences across generations and remained a firm favorite among our viewership. His departure is a significant loss for the NDR. Our hearts go out to his family."
A Marked Style
Famed for his inexhaustible stream of words laced with an earthy, tender charm, Carlo von Tiedemann first entered the world on October 20, 1943, in Stargard, Pomerania. His father, a general in the Prussian army, and his mother, Fides, a von Kleist, shaped an illustrious family background. Due to the war, they moved to Hamburg when Carlo was still a child. Battered by polio and later by two brain tumors, Von Tiedemann didn't let life's trials dampen his spirit.
The road to the NDR was not straightforward. After a stint as a publishing salesman's apprentice, he joined the "Cuxhavener Allgemeine" as a volunteer. Then, he worked as a police reporter for the "Hamburger Abendblatt", caught the jet-setter's bug in Buenos Aires as a correspondent for Springer-Auslandsdienst, and finally found his true calling at the NDR in 1971.
Standing Strong
The seasoned media figure's distinctive beard and crafty humor were familiar to sports fans, as he served as announcer for the HSV from 1991-1998. He even took on small roles in series like "Großstadtrevier." However, in the 1980s, his career hit a roadblock when "Show und Co. mit Carlo" wrapped up at ZDF prematurely after kicking off in early 1984. A mix-up with prostitutes, cocaine, and debt led the headlines, but Von Tiedemann turned things around.
With introspection, he paid off his debts over 12 years and devoted more time to his loved ones. The devout von Tiedemann also took an interest in the Hamburg children's hospice "Sternenbrücke" foundation.

The Commission's proposal to extend the period of validity of the agreement includes the NDR, with Carlo von Tiedemann being a key figure in the network, and covers the period from 1st January to 31st December. After retiring, Carlo von Tiedemann, once a firm favorite and beloved celebrity in general-news for fifty years on the NDR, might choose to spend his time entertaining children at the Hamburg-based children's hospice "Sternenbrücke."
