NCERT Unveils Exclusive Curricula on Operation Sindoor, Emphasizing India's Military Reaction to the Pahalgam Assault

In a significant move, the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) has released two new learning modules on Operation Sindoor, a cross-border military action carried out by India in May 2025 against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. These modules, titled "Operation Sindoor – A Saga of Valour" for Classes 3–8 and "Operation Sindoor – A Mission of Honour and Bravery" for Classes 9–12, aim to provide students with an understanding of this significant operation.

The modules offer a comprehensive narrative, explaining Operation Sindoor not just as a military strike but as a promise to protect peace and honour the lives lost in terror attacks. They delve into India’s military readiness, technological capabilities, and strategic coordination among defence forces, diplomatic channels, and government agencies.

Historical context is also provided, with references to related events like the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, the Balakot airstrike, and the abrogation of Article 370, to connect the operation’s significance with recent developments. Visual aids such as images of downed Pakistani drones and maps detailing precision strikes are included to enhance engagement and understanding.

Stories, illustrative examples, and interactive activities tailored by age group are used to build engagement, critical thinking, and understanding of national security. The peace and development progress in Jammu and Kashmir post-Article 370 abrogation is also highlighted, framing the operation as a component of preserving that peace in the face of external threats.

The purpose of these modules is multifold. They aim to enhance young learners’ awareness of India’s military strength and strategic decision-making, instill patriotism, and encourage critical thinking about how countries respond to threats and maintain peace. They also use real, contemporary events to complement textbook learning with relatable stories and cause-effect analyses that improve retention and interest.

Moreover, the modules educate students about the significance of coordinated national responses to terrorism, emphasizing India's resolve to protect its sovereignty and citizens. The secondary-stage module, "Operation Sindoor - A Mission of Honour and Bravery", includes details about nationwide responses to the Pahalgam attack, such as candlelight marches and protests by Muslim communities.

It is important to note that these modules do not form part of regular textbooks but are likely to be used in schools as part of the curriculum. The modules are available in English and Hindi and will be used as supplementary resources through projects, posters, discussions, and debates.

The modules describe Operation Sindoor as a triumph of bravery, strategy, and innovation. However, they do not mention any specific incidents or events that occurred during the four days of hostilities, nor do they provide details about the outcome of Operation Sindoor.

Operation Sindoor was initiated on May 7, with India launching strikes against terrorist camps with long-range weapons and missiles. The action sparked four days of hostilities that ended on May 10 after both sides agreed to cease military operations.

In conclusion, these NCERT modules provide age-appropriate, engaging content designed to build national awareness, promote patriotism, and enrich students’ understanding of India's defence operations and diplomacy in the face of terrorism.
