NCAA Revokes Pilots' Licenses Due to Unauthorized Taxi Across Abuja Airport Runway
In an unprecedented move, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended the licences of two ValueJet pilots: Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, following a serious aviation safety breach at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, has caused widespread concern and is currently under investigation.
The incident began when the aircraft started taxiing without receiving proper clearance from air traffic control. Five individuals, three of whom were airport staff and the other two civilians, were seen near the front of the plane. One of the men stepped forward as the aircraft began to taxi, resulting in a close call. Remarkably, all five individuals crouched at the last moment as the aircraft's wing passed narrowly over them.
The matter has been described by the NCAA as a serious aviation safety breach. A short video shared alongside the NCAA's official statement showed the aircraft's engines running while five individuals were dangerously close to it. The video has since gone viral, sparking public outrage.
The incident involved Nigerian musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, who allegedly attempted to carry an unidentified liquid substance onboard the ValueJet flight to Lagos. The passenger refused to comply with aviation regulations that prohibit liquids exceeding 100ml unless declared and medically necessary. In an unfortunate turn of events, the passenger spilled the contents of the flask, later identified as alcohol, on a security officer.
The two non-uniformed men who were denied boarding earlier delayed the movement of the aircraft by remaining near it. The NCAA's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, confirmed the suspension, stating that any individual or airline found violating operational protocols would face strict regulatory action. He also emphasised that the matter remains under investigation, and all parties found culpable will be held accountable in line with the law.
The NCAA has stated that the safety of passengers and crew is their top priority. They are urging all parties involved to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation to ensure that the truth is uncovered and appropriate action can be taken. The suspension occurred with immediate effect pending the outcome of the investigation.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to aviation regulations and the potential consequences of non-compliance. The NCAA reiterated their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and security in Nigerian airspace.
