NBC Universal Secures Robert Ludlum's 'Bourne' and 'Treadstone' Book Collection in Significant Acquisition
In an exciting development for fans of the spy thriller genre, it has been announced that Matt Damon will reprise his role as Jason Bourne in a new film titled The Bourne Dilemma. This upcoming installment marks the first new Bourne film since the 2016 release, Jason Bourne.
Active development of The Bourne Dilemma is underway at Universal Pictures, with Edward Berger taking over the director's chair from Paul Greengrass. The film is expected to continue the legacy of the Bourne franchise, delving into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and justice versus revenge, across international locations such as London and Tokyo.
The deal, which grants rights in perpetuity, has been a highly competitive bidding situation. NBCUniversal has acquired all rights, excluding publishing, to Robert Ludlum's "Jason Bourne" and "Treadstone" book series. Seven offers were made from both streamers and studios, with Universal ultimately securing the rights.
Frank Marshall, a longtime Universal collaborator, will continue to shepherd forthcoming installments of the film series, as he has from the beginning of the "Bourne" franchise. Jeffrey Weiner, chairman & CEO of Captivate Entertainment and the executor of Ludlum's estate, is excited about the "Bourne" franchise remaining at Universal.
Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer stated that the Bourne franchise has reshaped the spy genre. The character Jason Bourne, a CIA assassin suffering from amnesia, has captivated audiences worldwide, with the films collectively grossing more than $1.64 billion at the global box office.
The Bourne franchise extends beyond films, with Bourne-themed video games, merchandise, and a popular Universal Studios Orlando theme park activation, "The Bourne Stuntactular". The deal was brokered by WME, which represents Captivate Entertainment.
While no official confirmation or production timeline beyond 2025-2026 has been announced yet, the plan is to continue expanding the Bourne universe with new stories for global audiences. With the return of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne and the talented team behind the franchise, fans can look forward to another thrilling chapter in the Bourne saga.
