NBC and MSNBC News to Divide Editorial Paths in Upcoming Month

MSNBC is set to undergo a significant transformation, officially splitting from NBC News starting next month. This split, announced last year, marks a new era for the cable news network as it rebrands and strengthens its editorial independence.

The network will be renaming itself to MS NOW (My Source for News, Opinion, and the World), reflecting its commitment to providing comprehensive news coverage, insightful analysis, and global perspectives.

In preparation for this change, MSNBC has been staffing up, with notable hires including Vaughn Hillyard, Laura Barrón-López, David Noriega, Jacob Soboroff, and Marc Santia. Sudeep Reddy will lead MSNBC's new Washington bureau, while Scott Matthews serves as the senior VP of newsgathering.

From October 6, MSNBC will effectively operate on its own editorially, with all staff beginning to use guidance from the newly-created MSNBC standards team. This day also marks a significant shift in MSNBC's operations, as the network will start to rely on its own reporters and crews, no longer relying on NBC News correspondents and crews for coverage outside of Washington, D.C.

Vaughn Hillyard, currently NBC News White House correspondent, will become MSNBC's White House correspondent on October 6. However, the specific roles that other NBC News staff will take on at MSNBC remain to be announced.

By October 20, NBC News resources in Washington, D.C. will no longer be used by MSNBC. The Versant spinoff, a long-planned event expected to close in January, adds another layer of change to MSNBC's future.

Steve Kornacki remains with NBC News, continuing his role as a key figure in the network's political coverage. The peacock logo, long associated with both MSNBC and NBC News, will no longer be used in any MSNBC branding. CNBC will also lose the peacock but keep its name.

As MSNBC embarks on this new chapter, it aims to establish itself as a distinct and independent news source, providing viewers with a unique blend of news, opinion, and global insights. The first key date in this transformation is October 6, marking the beginning of a new era for MSNBC.
