NBA's Lakers Consider Dealing Player with Contract Beyond 2026

The Los Angeles Lakers have been making moves to strengthen their roster for the upcoming 2025-26 season. The team's current training camp roster includes a mix of familiar faces and new additions. Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, and Maxi Kleber, all on expiring contracts, join Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, Jake LaRavia, and Jaxson Hayes.

In a significant move, the Lakers superstar Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks, keeping him off the free agency market next summer. However, the Lakers are reportedly open to trading for a player with a contract extending beyond 2026, and they can potentially include one of their 2031 or 2032 first-round picks in a trade.

Luka Doncic, known for his consistent goal of winning a championship, stressed every day that this remains his aim. Unfortunately, the Lakers missed out on the opportunity to sign Doncic this summer due to him being traded. Nevertheless, the Lakers made several offseason moves, including signing Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, Jake LaRavia, and re-signing Jaxson Hayes.

LeBron James exercised his $52.62 million player option for the 2025-26 season, ensuring his continued presence on the team. However, the uncertainty around his future with the Lakers may have played a role in free agent center Brook Lopez's decision to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers instead. Another player was considered for joining the Lakers this summer, but no specific name was mentioned.

Luka Doncic's new contract includes a player option in 2028, and he could opt out to sign a new deal for 35% of the salary cap, projecting to five years and $417 million. If Doncic decides to exercise this option, the Lakers will have to find a way to accommodate his new contract while also maintaining a competitive roster.

The Lakers' 2025-26 season will open against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 21. With Doncic and the new additions to the team, the Lakers are determined to make a strong start and maximize their title window. The team is aware of the importance of this season and is looking for ways to strengthen their roster further. The upcoming season promises to be an exciting one for Lakers fans.
