NBA Team, New York Knicks, Intends to Retain Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet
The New York Knicks have made a strategic move to retain the services of veteran players Landry Shamet and Malcolm Brogdon for the upcoming 2024-25 season. With a limited cap space to add one veteran on a minimum contract, the Knicks have opted to keep these two key players.
Landry Shamet, a Missouri native, returned to the Knicks last season after being waived due to a shoulder injury in the preseason. He signed a one-year deal to rejoin the team last Thursday, having declined "other options" to return to a locker room he liked and help the team compete for a title.
Shamet, who will enter his 7th NBA season, appeared in 50 games off the bench for the Knicks last season, averaging 5.7 points and 1.2 rebounds. He made his team debut just one day after agreeing to a contract and recorded a season-high 29 points in the Knicks' regular-season finale at Brooklyn on April 13. Shamet also shot a career-best 46.1% from the field and 39.7% from beyond the arc last season.
Malcolm Brogdon, who joined the Knicks last week on a one-year contract, won the 2016-17 Rookie of the Year and 2022-23 Sixth Man of the Year awards. He appeared in 24 games (13 starts) for the Washington Wizards last season, averaging 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 23.5 minutes per contest while shooting 43.3% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range.
To make room for Brogdon and Shamet on their 15-man opening night roster, the Knicks are likely to move Tyler Kolek, Pacome Dadiet, and Deuce McBride. The team has also faced the challenge of staying under the $207.8 million second tax apron threshold, requiring them to make a trade to open up cap space.
In addition to Brogdon and Shamet, the Knicks have also signed Garrison Mathews, Matt Ryan, and Alex Len this week. The team is hoping that these strategic moves will position them well for a successful season ahead.
