NBA Reinforces Integrity Policies Amidst Escalating Gambling Investigations

The world of professional basketball and sports betting have become increasingly intertwined, creating both opportunities and risks. Recently, high-profile gambling scandals have shaken the National Basketball Association (NBA), with three players – Jontay Porter, Terry Rozier, and Malik Beasley – being at the centre of investigations.

In April 2024, NBA commissioner Adam Silver banned Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter from the league for life after he admitted to intentionally manipulating his performance in two games during the 2023-24 season to benefit associates who bet on prop bets involving his statistics. Porter pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges.

Terry Rozier and Malik Beasley have also been linked to the federal probe, but neither has been charged as of August 2025.

The NBA is deeply concerned about the negative impact of wagering on the sport's reputation and the players' well-being. To address these issues, the league is considering stricter limits on proposition bets, especially for players signed to two-way contracts due to less visibility and scrutiny.

Ohio and New Jersey are seeking to curtail "microbets," wagers on in-game occurrences like individual pitches or shots, which are more susceptible to manipulation. Major League Baseball is examining microbets following suspicious wagering on select pitches in June.

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and the NBA are actively responding to protect the sport's integrity and safeguard players. Both organisations back reasonable limitations on certain types of prop bets to curb the risk of performance manipulation and reduce athlete abuse by gamblers. The NBA has also requested sportsbooks to stop allowing bets on under-prop bets involving players on two-way contracts after Porter's case.

The league conducts thorough investigations into gambling-related allegations, as it did for Porter, Rozier, and Beasley. Porter’s ban and guilty plea on conspiracy charges highlight the NBA's strict disciplinary measures.

Protecting players from harassment is another priority. The rise in sports betting has brought threats and harassment towards players from disgruntled fans. Players like Michael Porter Jr. and Kendrick Perkins have spoken out about death threats and abuse tied to betting outcomes. The NBA emphasises the importance of keeping players safe and maintaining the integrity and enjoyment of the game without putting athletes at risk.

These combined efforts aim to reduce gambling-related corruption, protect the welfare of players from external pressures and abuse, and maintain fan trust in the NBA's competitive integrity. Despite recent scandals shaking the sport, there remains optimism for the upcoming seasons with enhanced safeguards in place.

In 2009, former All-Star Gilbert Arenas was arrested and later released on a $50,000 bond in an alleged underground gambling ring centred on high-stakes poker games at his home. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the integrity of the game and the need for continued vigilance and cooperation with the gambling sector.

The NBA must act quickly to address these issues and ensure the sport remains fair, enjoyable, and trustworthy for players and fans alike.
