NBA player Tyler Herro undergoes foot surgery, sidelining him until no earlier than November for the Miami Heat.
The Miami Heat are gearing up for the 2025-26 season with some significant changes to their roster. Norman Powell, a well-known perimeter shooter, has joined the team following a three-team trade with the Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz. Powell shot an impressive 41.8% from long-range last season, the third time in the past four seasons that he connected on at least 40% of his 3-point attempts. He is expected to slide into Tyler Herro's spot in the starting lineup.
Unfortunately, Herro will miss the start of the season due to an ankle surgery he underwent on Friday. The timetable for his return is eight weeks. Herro, who earned his first All-Star nod last season, averaged career highs in points (23.9) and assists (5.5), and shot 37.5% from beyond the arc.
Herro dealt with discomfort in his left ankle during the offseason, and training camp was set to begin on Sept. 30, but surgery was viewed as the best option due to continued discomfort.
The Heat, who were eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs for the second consecutive season, will be relying on Powell, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, and Kel'el Ware for the start of the 2025-26 season.
With Herro out, the Heat's roster is missing a key player for the start of the season. Herro is set to make $31 million this season, and becomes extension eligible on Oct. 1.
Despite the setback, the Heat have the tenth-best odds to win the Eastern Conference (+4500 at FanDuel). The team will open its season on Oct. 22 against the Orlando Magic.
As the Heat prepare for the new season, they are looking to bounce back from their recent playoff disappointments and make a run for the championship with their revamped roster.
