NBA coach Rick Carlisle has secured a long-term contract renewal with the Indiana Pacers.
The Indiana Pacers have announced a multi-year contract extension for head coach Rick Carlisle, following the team's impressive run in the 2025 NBA Finals and their second consecutive Eastern Conference Finals appearance.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Carlisle has agreed to a four-year deal that will keep him with the Pacers through the 2028-29 season. This extension marks his second contract extension with Indiana since returning in 2021.
Carlisle's leadership has been credited for putting the Pacers in a position to win during the playoffs. In the 2025 playoffs, the team advanced to the NBA Finals, marking their second Finals appearance in two years. Although they were defeated by the Thunder in the 2024 NBA Finals, the Pacers made it to the Conference Finals in both 2024 and 2025.
The Pacers have improved their win total in each season since 2021-22, finishing the 2024-25 season with a record of 50-32. The team's success can be attributed to Carlisle's coaching prowess, as he is the Pacers' all-time winningest coach with franchise records for regular-season wins (656) and playoff wins (41).
With the extension, the Pacers have signalled their commitment to stability and continued growth, especially as they aim to build around rising star Bennedict Mathurin and integrate young talent like Johnny Furphy into Carlisle's system. The team will be without key player Tyrese Haliburton in the 2025-26 season due to injury.
Pacers president Kevin Pritchard praised Carlisle's impact both on the court and in the community, highlighting his leadership and his Drive and Dish program, which further enhances his value to the organization. Carlisle, at age 65, also became the NBA's oldest active head coach after other veteran coaches retired or were dismissed, underscoring his enduring presence and influence in the league.
In summary, the multi-year extension reflects the Pacers' confidence in Carlisle’s leadership and their outlook toward sustained competitiveness and player development moving forward. With Carlisle at the helm, the Pacers are poised for continued success in the coming seasons.
