NBA Coach Criticizes National Rifle Association (Once More)
Golden State Warriors' Coach Steve Kerr Stands Firm on Gun Control
In a bold move during game two of the NBA Finals in June, Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, donned a shirt supporting the anti-gun group, March for Our Lives. This action came as no surprise to many, as Kerr has been vocal about his stance on gun control in the past.
Based in San Francisco, the Warriors have a long-standing history of political activism. In 2015, they visited the White House during Barack Obama's presidency, but since then, they have twice refused to visit the White House during the Trump Administration.
March for Our Lives, the anti-gun group that Kerr's shirt supported, is known for its plan to address gun violence, often referred to as "A Comprehensive Plan to Abolish the Right to Keep and Bear Arms." This plan, proposed by the group, aims to reform the country's gun laws in an effort to reduce gun-related incidents.
Kerr, along with groups like March for Our Lives and Moms Demand Action, has been critical of the NRA's history as a defender of U.S. Bill of Rights civil liberties. In October 2018, Kerr stated his intention to vote for candidates who stand against the NRA and advocated for the elimination of bump stocks, high-capacity magazines, and semi-automatic weapons.
On Dec. 9, 2020, during a home game, Kerr expressed his support for stricter gun control measures, stating that the safety of citizens should be prioritized over funds received from the NRA. This is not an isolated incident, as Kerr has supported Democratic candidates who are willing to speak out against the NRA.
Recently, San Francisco labeled the NRA and its members as domestic terrorists, further highlighting the growing divide between those advocating for stricter gun control and the NRA. As of the current paragraph, the Warriors have a 5-23 record and are in last place in the Western Conference, but their stance on gun control continues to make headlines.
