Nazi-era youth rebellion: No special honor for "Lille" on Bernhardiplatz?

In the cultural landscape of Leipzig, discussion is underway regarding the remembrance of the city's youth groups, particularly the 'Lille' group in Leipzig east and the existing 'Meuten Memorial'.

The 'Meuten Memorial', a cross-district symbol of youth resistance against National Socialism, was inaugurated in April 2025 on the Lindenauer Market. Developed by the Theater of the Young World (TdJW) and the collective Plus X, the memorial consists of three stones with an integrated LED running text, inviting visitors to engage and reflect.

However, the 'Meuten Memorial' might undergo changes as ideas are being exchanged for temporarily highlighting specific youth groups. This approach could involve developing ideas for the use of the LED running texts of the 'Meuten Memorial'.

On the other hand, the city administration is organizing a participation process for a proposed memorial for the resistance of Leipzig's youth against the NS dictatorship on the Bernhardiplatz in Reudnitz. No other memorial for youth resistance against National Socialism, apart from the 'Meuten Memorial', is currently planned according to the city administration.

Meanwhile, the city administration is considering an alternative approach to remember the 'Lille' youth group in Leipzig east. Details regarding this proposal and potential modifications to the existing 'Meuten Memorial' are yet to be disclosed.

The department for strategic cultural policy has provided a statement on the Green proposal regarding the new memorial. Further theater formats or mediation projects could be initiated in Leipzig east, similar to those with Johannes Herwig's 'Until the stars tremble' in 2023 at the Werk 2.

The realization of the proposed memorial for the 'Lille' group is expected to be completed by October 2028. For more information on memorial plans for this youth group or the 'Meuten Memorial' project, it may be necessary to consult local Leipzig cultural heritage boards, municipal planning documents, or specific organizations dedicated to historical remembrance in Leipzig.
