Navy vessel navigates Taiwan Strait, reportedly encounters Chinese military.

Connecting Taiwan Globally and Attracting Global Attention to Taiwan

Fresh Take:

On a windswept Wednesday, the USS William P. Lawrence, a feisty guided missile destroyer, cut through the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) didn't mince words, branding the maneuver "hype" the next day.

The PLA's Eastern Theater Command mobilized their naval and air forces to keep tabs on the USS Lawrence, according to a statement referencing "twisted logic," muddying international perception, and misleading the public. The statement didn't specify the comments in question.

"Enough with the distortions and hype, USA!" the command asserted, calling for both nations to collaborate in maintaining peace and stability within the Taiwan Strait.

A promotional video shared on the command's social media account showcased a Chinese sailor observing the US warship through a pair of binoculars from afar.

The Ministry of National Defense, on the other hand, remained tight-lipped regarding the incident.

The US Navy remained silent on the matter as well, declining to comment on the incident at the time of press. The USS Lawrence's last reported voyage through the Taiwan Strait was in February. The US Navy navigates the strait approximately once a month.

In the broader context, the US Indo-Pacific Command labeled the transit as a routine operation upholding the principle of freedom of navigation for all countries in accordance with international law.
