Navigator's spouse claims Navalny became ill due to Russian poisoning
Opposition leader Alexei Navalny passed away in a Russian prison north of the Arctic Circle in February 2024, at the age of 47. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain a subject of intense scrutiny and debate.
In August 2020, Navalny survived a poisoning attack using the nerve agent Novichok. He was transferred to Germany on his wife's request and treated at the Berlin Charité. Two independent labs examined smuggled biological samples from Navalny and concluded he was killed by poisoning.
However, Russian authorities officially attributed his death to natural causes. This assertion was met with widespread scepticism, both domestically and abroad. Critics of Russia – and many Western governments – believe he was deliberately killed.
Julia Navalnaya, Alexei's widow, has been a vocal advocate for transparency in the investigation into her husband's death. She has urged for the clear identification of the poison used and the release of the lab reports. It remains unclear who commissioned the lab tests on Navalny's remains.
Initially, Navalny was charged with violating parole from an earlier case. Upon his return to Russia in January 2021, he was immediately arrested by Russian authorities. Later, the Russian justice system initiated further proceedings, including charges of extremism, and sentenced him to a long prison term.
Julia Navalnaya has criticised Western politicians for allegedly delaying the publication of the findings for political reasons. She has also called for the identification of the perpetrator of the poisoning. Despite numerous investigations, the alleged perpetrator has not been identified.
The labs' identities and locations were not revealed by Julia Navalnaya, adding to the mystery surrounding the case. The investigation into the death of Alexei Navalny continues, with many hoping for answers and justice.
