Alexei Navalny, the most vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Russia, died in Russian custody about a year and a half ago. His death has sparked controversy and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his demise.

In August 2020, Navalny was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok, an incident he later attributed to the Russian FSB. He was treated at the Berlin Charité hospital after his wife, Julia Navalnaya, requested his transfer to Germany.

Following his return to Russia in January 2021, Russian authorities immediately arrested him, charging him with violating parole from an earlier case. Navalny was subsequently imprisoned north of the Arctic Circle.

In February 2024, Navalny died in custody. Russian authorities officially attributed his death to natural causes, a claim that has been met with scepticism by critics of Russia and many Western governments. Some believe Navalny's death was a targeted killing.

Julia Navalnaya, in a video published on YouTube, revealed that biological samples of her husband were secretly smuggled out of Russia and examined in two independent laboratories located in two different foreign countries. However, the exact countries and the specific laboratories have not been disclosed.

Julia Navalnaya called for the release of the lab reports, criticising Western politicians for allegedly delaying the publication for 'political reasons.' She also stated that the findings were based on these investigations, but the exact results, including the type of poison used, were not revealed.

The Russian justice system later initiated other cases against Navalny, including extremism, and sentenced him to a long prison term. These developments have further fuelled speculation and concern about the safety and fairness of the Russian legal system.

Navalny's death and the circumstances surrounding it continue to be a subject of international interest and debate. His legacy as a prominent critic of the Russian government and his untimely demise have left a significant impact on the political landscape of Russia and the world.
