Rhine River Navigation Returns to Normal After Recent Rainfall

Before the rainfall, the water levels on the Rhine were unusually low, causing restrictions on navigation and reducing cargo capacity. In some critical sections, the water level was as low as 102 cm at Kaub, well below the 150 cm threshold needed for fully loaded 2,000-metric-ton barges. This had a significant impact on shipping, with cargo loads being drastically reduced—sometimes halved or reduced by up to 75%—increasing the number of vessels required for the same volume of freight and thereby raising transport costs and times.
However, the recent rains have reversed these conditions and normalized shipping operations. The water levels at critical sections, including Duisburg, Cologne, and the Caub chokepoint, have returned to typical navigational conditions for shipping. As a result, cargo capacity has been restored, and shipping has returned to normal.
According to the spokesperson for the Rhine Waterways and Shipping Authority, the current state of the Rhine is stable, with no reports of any unusual conditions. The Rhine is not currently experiencing flooding, and there is no longer any restriction on navigation on the river.
