Finland invests in the modernization of Hamina-class missile vessels (4 vessels) and the construction of 4 new Pohjanmaa-class multirole corvettes. The initial hull, boasting a displacement of 4,300 tons, was unveiled on May 21, 2025. Meanwhile, Poland aggressively advances its shipbuilding plans.

In the expansive Baltic Sea region, a significant shift is unfolding as several neighboring nations reinforce their naval capabilities. This development is evident through various shipbuilding projects and modernization initiatives undertaken by Finland, Poland, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, and Germany.

Finland is focusing its naval modernization on the upgrading and replacement of its Hamina-class missile boats with four advanced multi-purpose corvettes under the Squadron 2020 program. The first of these new corvettes, named Pohjanmaa-class, was launched on May 21st, 2025, with a displacement of 4,300 tons.

Meanwhile, Poland is constructing a series of six Kormoran II-class mine countermeasure ships, with three already in service. The flagship of the Polish fleet will be the Project 106 Miecznik multi-purpose frigate. The first of three planned hulls for this project, the ORP Wicher, was laid down on January 31st, 2024.

Sweden's naval core consists of five Visby-class corvettes. The country has chosen to forego their modernization in favor of building four new Luleå-class corvettes, with the first two ships scheduled for commissioning by 2030 and the other two by 2035.

The naval capabilities of the Baltic Sea's smaller nations, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, are relatively limited. However, the European Union is planning to provide these countries with City-class mine countermeasure ships. Two such ships, with a displacement of 2,800 tons, are currently undergoing trials in Belgium (Oostende) and the Netherlands (Vlissingen).

Denmark has boosted its naval modernization efforts, focusing on the Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates, which are highly advanced and equipped for various tasks.

Germany is proceeding with the construction of five new frigates, belonging to the F127 type, with a displacement of 10,000 tons.

This collective naval modernization efforts underscore a broader trend of enhanced security and economic interests in the Baltic region. These developments not only highlight growing regional cooperation among European navies but also signify a capability to control shipping in the region swiftly.
