Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny's team has launched a campaign against President Vladimir Putin ahead of the presidential election on March 17, dubbing it "Russia Without Putin." The exiled opposition members encourage Russian citizens to cast their votes for an alternative candidate, aiming to sow doubt, particularly about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Spreading Doubt and Encouraging Participation

Navalny's team has introduced a website to guide citizens on the voting process, emphasizing that any elections, even the most rigged ones, foster doubt. They believe it's their duty to address these doubts, emphazing that Putin's actions are harmful to the country. The team's primary goal is to persuade President Putin opponents to participate in the election.

Kremlin's Response and Election Timeline

The Federation Council, Russia's upper house of parliament, has officially scheduled the presidential election for March 17, 2024. It's expected that Putin will soon formally announce his candidacy, given the constitution amendments in 2020. Intense propaganda campaigns have already started on state television, soliciting support for Putin as the election date approaches.

Before his death, Navalny had a significant impact on Russia, inspiring tens of thousands of protesters and garnering widespread support despite the propagandistic campaigns against him. His death sparked protests and vigils in cities around the world, demonstrating the international support for his cause.

However, the Russian opposition has not been able to unite since Navalny's death, with rival groups trading accusations. Nonetheless, the international protests continue to show Navalny's continued influence.

Doubts Surrounding Putin and the 2024 election

Given the current political climate and the ongoing war in Ukraine, it remains uncertain how effective Navalny's campaign will be in directly impacting the 2024 presidential election. Nevertheless, his legacy serves as a powerful symbol of opposition to Putin's regime and will likely shape public opinion in the lead-up to the election.
