Fire Department Exercise in Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven Successfully Concludes

On September 17, the Fire Departments of Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven conducted a ship fire-fighting exercise on the Luns' platform station ship "Weser." The exercise, which took place approximately five nautical miles north of the island of Wangerooge, aimed to train and improve the cooperation of maritime emergency teams under realistic conditions at sea.

The exercise scenario involved a fire in the rudder room of the "Weser" after a fictional collision. Several crew members were reported missing and some were trapped, with one of the missing persons portrayed as severely injured.

The exercise began around 10 a.m. and lasted for about three hours. Three Maritime Incident Response Groups (MIRG) were involved: two from the Bremerhaven Fire Department and one from the Wilhelmshaven Fire Department. Participants practiced orientation on ships under difficult conditions, structured leadership, and communication work in a maritime environment.

Several special ships were used for logistical support and personnel transfer, including the multi-purpose ship "Mellum," the buoy layer "Nordergründe," and the Luns' platform setter "Visurgis." The exercise was supported by the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) Weser-Jade-Nordsee.

Christian Gercken, the exercise leader, concluded that all exercise participants were rescued, and the fire-fighting was successful. Fire Department Councilor Peter Skusa expressed satisfaction with the exercise, praising the high professionalism of the emergency forces. He stated that the exercise further strengthened the readiness for action of the Fire Departments of Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven.
