Naval Academy Lifts Lockdown Following Threat Investigation; One Individual Sustains Injuries in Incident
In a concerning turn of events, the U.S. Naval Academy found itself in a state of heightened alert on a recent evening. Reports of suspicious activity on the Naval Academy grounds were received at 5:07 p.m., prompting an immediate response from local and state law enforcement.
The threats were allegedly made by a former midshipman, who was recently dismissed from the academy for repeatedly threatening the campus. Due to privacy concerns, the individual's name has not been made public.
As the situation unfolded, authorities conducted an extensive search of the Naval Academy grounds. The academy was placed under lockdown for several hours, causing a tense atmosphere among the midshipmen and staff.
During the incident, one person was injured during the clearing of a building by Naval Security Forces. The injured individual was medevacked with injuries and is reported to be in stable condition. Another midshipman was also injured during the clearing of a building, but their condition is also stable.
Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the Naval Academy Board of Visitors, praised the response of first responders and medical personnel in the incident. She also expressed concern over the recent gun violence and political violence in the United States, calling for reflection and unity in the face of these acts of violence.
In her statement, Congresswoman Elfreth quoted the naval expression, "Don't give up the ship," which means to never surrender or give up. She reiterated her commitment to working with various parties to ensure the safety and security of midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy.
The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center was involved in the treatment of the injured individual from the U.S. Naval Academy incident.
The lockdown was lifted and the U.S. Naval Academy was given the all clear at 12:17 a.m. An investigation is currently underway regarding the incident at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Congresswoman Elfreth also made a reference to the horrific shootings on two campuses and bomb threats to Maryland state leaders and multiple HBCUs, emphasising the need for increased security measures and community vigilance in these challenging times.
