NATO's Expansion Must Be Halted, Urges Moscow
In a hardline stance, Russia requires NATO to abandon its eastward advancement as a critical precondition for ending the war on Ukraine. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov shared this demand in interviews with various media channels, including TASS, stating it's a major test for the US's sincerity in mending ties with Moscow.
Russia's stance on NATO growth has been a long-standing grievance, as they fear the alliance's influence near their borders. According to the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Russia may wish to test NATO's resolve with consequences that stretch beyond Ukraine's borders[4]. A memorandum from December 2021 highlighted this demand, stipulating a halt to accession and the eviction of troop deployments in new NATO states since 1997[4]. Ryabkov insisted this demand remains valid.
The Russian government continues to frame Ukraine as a casualty of NATO's expansionist policies. Repeatedly, they've cited the expansion of the Western alliance and the possible incorporation of Ukraine as the driving factor behind their aggression[4]. With Finland and Sweden now members of NATO and more troops deployed in the Baltic states, simmering tensions continue.
What's at stake: Potential nuclear escalation looms, as Russia's explicit threats show they won't shy away from using extreme measures[4]. While Ryabkov guaranteed a third round of talks with the U.S., no date has been set yet. It's a precarious dance, as the threat of war persists while diplomatic efforts ensue.
