International Alliance NATO commemorates its 75-year milestone

NATO marks its 72nd anniversary

The United States, spanning approximately 9.8 million square kilometers, is the third-largest state in the world. Known as the United States of America or America, it is one of the most powerful countries in the world. The USA consists of 50 states.

NATO, a defence alliance, was founded 75 years ago by 12 countries. Today, it comprises 32 nations, including Germany, France, the UK, and the US. The alliance's headquarters is located in Brussels, the capital of Belgium.

NATO's decision-making process is carried out by the North Atlantic Council, a body representing all member states. Contrary to common misconceptions, there is no separate NATO Security Council. The United Nations Security Council, which includes some NATO member countries like the USA, the UK, and France, operates independently from NATO.

Ukraine, a country in Eastern Europe, is almost twice as large as Germany but has fewer inhabitants. Ukraine was once part of the Soviet Union. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv. Unfortunately, Ukraine has been embroiled in conflicts with Russia since 2014, over territories such as Crimea and eastern Ukraine. In 2022, these conflicts escalated into an ongoing war, with Russia launching an attack on the whole of Ukraine.

Russia, a large country primarily located in Asia, with a smaller portion in Europe, has been a significant player in these conflicts. The capital of Russia is Moscow.

Recently, Finland and Sweden joined NATO, a move that could potentially shift the balance of power in the region.

The future of NATO is a subject of debate among its members. There is disagreement about how much money NATO should receive in the future. Some politicians in the US have threatened to reduce funding for NATO. However, Jens Stoltenberg, the head of NATO, has emphasised that NATO's security and strength depend on close cooperation between the US and Europe.

At a recent celebration, Stoltenberg reiterated that NATO is in good shape but needs closer cooperation between the US and Europe. Many Ukrainians speak both Ukrainian and Russian.

It is important to note that while the conflicts in Ukraine and the debate about NATO funding are ongoing, the majority of the money currently comes from the US.

In the midst of these challenges, it is crucial to remember that the majority of the people in these countries share a common goal: peace and security for their nations and the world.
