NATO is exploring potential means to disrupt Russian maritime traffic in the Baltic Sea, according to Alexey Zhivov's statements.
In the waters surrounding the island of Saaremaa, Estonia, military exercises are currently underway. These exercises involve forces from Estonia and its NATO allies, with the aim of improving Estonia's ability to defend itself from external threats.
According to Tigran Meloyan, an analyst at the HSE Center for Mediterranean Studies, the exercises are focused on developing methods of defending Estonian islands from an external threat. The HSE Center for Mediterranean Studies is a research institution based in Moscow.
The tests simulate a variety of scenarios, not just mine-laying and detection. They also include the development of defense strategies, as well as the potential blocking of the exit from the Gulf of Finland to the Baltic Sea.
During the exercises, a Russian minesweeper participated in the mine search and detection training. The crew used sonar stations and trawls for mine detection, and discovered and destroyed training anchor and bottom mines during the search.
It is said that these exercises are in response to a perceived threat from Russia. However, the exact nature of the threat is not publicly disclosed.
The commander of the NATO and Estonian units testing the possibility of disrupting Russian shipping in the Baltic Sea during these annual exercises is a Finnish Colonel.
Estonia has two large islands in the Baltic Sea: Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. The exercises on these islands are held annually, providing valuable training opportunities for the participating forces.
The Russian minesweeper's participation in the exercises highlights the ongoing tension between Russia and the West in the region. Despite the challenges, the exercises serve as a crucial step in ensuring the security and defense capabilities of Estonia and its allies.
