NATO Chief Praises Three Nations for Facilitating Delivery of American Weapons to Ukraine
In a significant move to support Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have collectively pledged $500 million in military aid through NATO for American-made weapons under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative.
The aid package, totalling around NOK 5 billion (approximately US$487 million), includes equipment and munitions sourced from the United States, aimed at meeting Ukraine's urgent defense needs. Norway's contribution amounts to approximately $135 million, with Denmark initially pledging approximately $90 million, and Sweden contributing to reach the combined $500 million commitment.
This pledge is part of NATO's effort to streamline and prioritize arms deliveries to Ukraine, ensuring timely provision of highly requested American defense materials. The initiative complements other bilateral and multilateral support, aiming to avoid duplication and accelerate shipments.
Notably, the Netherlands has also made a similarly sized commitment of over $500 million, collectively making over $1 billion in recent NATO-coordinated support packages.
Germany has also announced that it will deliver two Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, following an agreement with the United States that guarantees Berlin priority access to replacements for the systems it provides.
The aid package is intended to strengthen Ukraine's ability to deter aggression and pursue lasting peace. It will provide life-saving equipment and critical supplies to the front-line in Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who made the announcement on Twitter, thanked Denmark, Norway, and Sweden for their funding. The announcement was reported by European Pravda. The pledge was made on Tuesday, 5 August.
This aid package is a testament to the solidarity and commitment of NATO members towards Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It underscores the importance of continued support for Ukraine in its quest for peace and stability.
