NATO Chief and Foreign Minister Fidan converse on Gaza, Ukraine matters
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan chatted over the phone with NATO Chief Mark Rutte on a Sunday call, discussing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the dynamic Gaza Strip scenario, and preparations for the upcoming Holland NATO Summit.
But the day wasn't just about global tensions, Hakan Fidan also connected with his Egyptian and Jordanian counterparts, Badr Abdelatty and Ayman Safadi, to discuss the latest happenings in Gaza.
The Middle East has been simmering, with Israel's controversial offensive in Gaza commencing in October 2023, causing the heart-wrenching deaths of nearly 54,800 Palestinians, many of them innocent women and children. The risk of famine looms large for the enclave's over 2 million inhabitants.
Back in November, the International Criminal Court handed out arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant due to alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Currently, Israel stands accused of war crimes at The Hague's International Court of Justice for its cruel treatment of Gaza's civilians.
Meanwhile, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan have been treading the diplomatic tightrope, balancing the need for regional stability with humanitarian concern. In the past, these countries have mediated conflicts and provided humanitarian aid, but recent updates suggest they don't have a direct involvement in the current Gaza Strip situation.
Stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds.
Of note: The Gaza Strip conflict has been ongoing since October 2023, with several losses on the Palestinian side, prompting humanitarian concerns. Israel's military actions have sparked international criticism and legal investigations, including war crimes charges.
