Nationwide tactical flight exercise training commences in BPOL NRW

The Federal Police and police forces of several states in Germany are gearing up for a significant training event, marking the 44th round of professional helicopter pilot training. Scheduled to commence on September 22, 2025, in Sankt Augustin, the exercise will see the participation of 13 helicopters from various federal states, including Brandenburg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.

The multi-day maneuver will involve formation flights, with the helicopters potentially being visible over various cities in these states. The route planning for the exercise takes the helicopters from Sankt Augustin via Gifhorn, Hamburg, Fuhlendorf, Barth, Neubrandenburg, Blumberg, Bautzen, Kassel-Calden, and back to Sankt Augustin on September 26, 2025.

As part of the training, two pilot trainees from Saxony will also be participating. The exercise focuses on flight tactics, with a significant step in the final training phase being the police tactical training. This deepens previously taught police tactics in different deployment areas and familiarizes the crews with the procedures of formation flight.

The aviation school for police service in Sankt Augustin plays a central role in training police officers for aviation service. Since autumn 2023, already trained police officers have been undergoing a 22-month course to become professional helicopter pilots at the aviation school.

The Federal Police Aviation Group, based in Sankt Augustin near Bonn, is one of the largest police aviation organizations worldwide. It includes the maintenance operation, the aviation school for police service, and six Federal Police Aviation Squadrons. The Group serves as a service provider for various federal and state authorities, including the European Border and Coast Guard Agency FRONTEX.

In addition to the Federal Police, 13 federal states also operate their own police aviation. The operational flight activities of the Federal Police Aviation Group primarily support the daily tasks of the Federal Police, including border, rail, and maritime surveillance. One of the main deployment focuses of the Federal Police's aviation service is the regular provision of air transport capacities for federal police intervention forces on weekends.

After the successful completion of this training course, the officers will contribute significantly to internal security as an integral part of the flight squadrons of the Federal Police or the police forces of the states.
