Nationwide tactical air exercise preparation commences with training course in BPOL NRW
Federal and State Police Helicopter Pilots Begin 44th Training Course
The 44th training course for federal and state police helicopter pilots is set to commence on September 22, 2025. This training, conducted by the aviation school for police service in Sankt Augustin, will see the participation of 13 helicopters from various federal states.
The training course will focus on tactical flight content, with a significant step in the final phase being the police tactical training. This deepens previously taught police tactics in various deployment scenarios and familiarizes the crews with the procedures of formation flight.
The operational flight operations of the Federal Police Aviation Unit primarily support the daily tasks of the Federal Police, including border, rail, and maritime surveillance. The unit, which operates a fleet of 93 helicopters, is the second-largest operator of civil aircraft in Germany after Lufthansa, and counts among the largest police aviation organizations worldwide.
The exercise route will take the helicopters from Sankt Augustin via Gifhorn, Hamburg, Fuhlendorf, Barth, Neubrandenburg, Blumberg, Bautzen, Kassel-Calden, and back to Sankt Augustin on September 26, 2025. The training course involves multiple authorities and federal states, with training conducted at various locations along the journey. However, specific agencies, states, and exact training sites are not detailed in the provided search results.
Trained police officers have been undergoing an approximately 22-month course to become professional helicopter pilots at the aviation school for police service in Sankt Augustin since autumn 2023. After the license handover on December 11, 2025, the officers will join internal security forces as part of a federal or state police flight squadron.
The regular provision of air transport capacities for federal police intervention forces on weekends is one of the focus areas of the Federal Police's aviation service. The federal police aviation group also acts as a service provider for the authorities and institutions of the federal police, as well as for other federal and state authorities with security-relevant tasks.
The federal police aviation group supports international authorities and organizations, such as the European Border and Coast Guard Agency FRONTEX. There are 13 federal states that operate their own police aviation vehicles, with close cooperation between the authorities ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and common safety standards.
During the training exercise, the helicopters will be visible in formation flight over several major cities. Press inquiries can be directed to [email protected] or [email protected].
