Nationwide Disaster Drill Explained for Friday: Key Points to Consider
Mexico is set to hold its twice-annual earthquake drill on Friday, a day that holds a somber significance as it marks the eighth anniversary of a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that claimed over 350 lives. This year's drill will involve all 32 federal entities, with a hypothetical 8.1-magnitude earthquake scenario for central Mexico, including Mexico City.
The drill will begin at noon Mexico City time and will include emergency exercises for various natural disasters, depending on the region of the country. In certain states, the hypothetical emergency will be a hurricane, urban fire, or tsunami instead of an earthquake.
Local governments, civil protection and security agencies, emergency responders, and everyday residents will participate in the drill. The public is asked to evacuate buildings and obey instructions from safety representatives. Participants should assist and look after children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
The federal government will test its cell phone alert system during the drill, aiming to send a warning to cell phones in every corner of the country. Cell phones are expected to start pinging at the same time. The earthquake siren will ring out from 14,491 loudspeakers, primarily located in Mexico City.
The public is also asked to consider family civil protection plans and identify safe areas in homes, schools, and workplaces. Alerts will be issued by 100 AM/FM commercial radio stations and 11 public TV stations.
During the drill, emergency response protocols will be activated, allowing authorities to test emergency response strategies. The public is asked to remain calm and allow responders to carry out their exercises.
Last year's September drill only tested the cell phone alert system in the greater Mexico City area. This year, the drill will be more comprehensive, covering the entire nation.
The search results do not provide information about the participants of the disaster exercises on Friday. However, it is expected that the participation of the community will be crucial in ensuring the success of the drill and the readiness of the nation for any potential emergency.
