Nationwide Alert Day on 12th September - Mobile sirens to blast in Bremen for the first time on four occasions
On September 12th, Germany will conduct a nationwide civil defense drill to test and enhance its preparedness for air raid emergencies. The drill, which will involve sending warning signals across various channels, is an essential part of the country's ongoing efforts to ensure public safety in times of crisis.
The drill will commence with the sounding of sirens nationwide, followed by precautionary alerts and eventual cancellation of the warning. Citizens are advised to evacuate quickly to the nearest civil defense shelters, such as apartment basements, subway stations, or underground shopping malls, or other underground spaces if no official shelters are nearby.
In addition to the 38 permanently installed sirens in Bremen, four mobile sirens will be used for the first time during the drill. These mobile sirens will be crucial in alerting residents in areas not covered by the fixed sirens.
To ensure that the emergency messages reach as many people as possible, there will be an interruption or override of radio, TV broadcasts, and mobile phone networks. Radio and television stations, mobile phones, sirens, and digital billboards will broadcast test warnings throughout the duration of the drill.
The drill will also check the coordination of warning systems, ensuring that they can work effectively together during a real emergency. This collaboration is crucial to ensuring that the population remains informed and can respond appropriately to potential threats.
In real warning situations, the sirens can be moved to different areas to ensure maximum coverage. Messages will be broadcast on radio and television, and warning apps like NINA will also be triggered during the drill.
The purpose of the drill is to familiarize the population with emergency signals and procedures and to evaluate the effectiveness of communication and evacuation protocols in a crisis situation. By participating in the drill, the government aims to improve public awareness, test shelter evacuation procedures, and verify emergency communication, including mobile sirens and broadcast interruptions.
The survey results are essential for evaluating the civil defense drill and improving the warning system. From the day of the civil defense drill until September 19th at 11:59 p.m., a survey can be participated in at www.warntag-umfrage.de.
It is important to note that there will be no specific instructions for the population during the nationwide warning drill. If possible, people should inform relatives and other close contacts to avoid unnecessary alarm. An all-clear signal will be given at 11:45 a.m. during the drill.
The exercise is intended to remind the population of the importance of taking warnings about impending dangers seriously. Last year, the interplay of individual warning systems reached 96% of the population during a warning.
