Yo, it's scorching in mainland Spain! The mercury went sky-high on Friday, May 2, surpassing 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit), breaking the previous record set on May 21, 2022. That's right, peeps, it was hotter than ever for a May day since records began back in 1950!
AEMET, the national weather agency, shared the news on their social media, stating, "This was the hottest day for a month of May across mainland Spain since the beginning of the data series in 1950." Wanna know the second-hottest May day? It was last Saturday with an average temp of 23.91C!
So, what caused this heatwave? Well, a massive blob of tropical air from Africa moved north, heating up things around Spain, making temperatures more than 10C above the usual for this time of year. In some parts of the southern region of Andalusia, temps even soared beyond 40C!
Undoubtedly, it's not the first time that Spain's seen exceptionally high May temperatures. Similar events went down in 2015 and 2022, AEMET mentioned.
