Nation's Star, Dez Candy, to Grace Sophomore Semi-Formal Event
The Class of 2027 at Holy Cross is gearing up for an exciting Sophomore Semi-Formal event, set to take place on March 4 at the Hogan Ballroom from 8 pm to 11 pm. The highlight of the evening will be the live performance by the renowned polka band, Fat Cats.
Fat Cats, known for their energetic performances and distinctive sound, will make a comeback after a hiatus since 2022. The band, consisting of Dez Candy (the "Polka Prince of Worcester"), Johnny Treats, Karl Marie Yeats, and Tickle Twice, has released four albums besides their classic 2006 "Blast Out," including "Jerry's Going Bowlin'," "Who Said That?", and the recently controversial "Let's Get Together," which stirred up discussions in the polka scene due to its experimentation with folk music.
While the exact purpose of the funding for Fat Cats' performance at the event remains undisclosed, it is typical for such expenses to cover the band's fee, equipment rental, travel expenses, and other related costs to provide live entertainment for the event attendees.
The event promises to be a night full of fun, with free pizza and casino tables adding to the excitement. Caitlin Wiffler '27, a student involved in several campus activities, including the Battle of the Roommates hosted by Holy Cross’s Residence Hall Association on April 25, is looking forward to the event. However, her anticipation is slightly dampened by her ongoing struggle with parking fines, which have accumulated thousands of dollars of debt.
In addition to the Sophomore Semi-Formal, Parents Weekend activities included a trip to Walmart, waiting for parents to pick out clothing, and listening to a parent talk about their work. The prizes for Battle of the Roommates were worth up to $700, with Caitlin Wiffler '27 emerging as a participant. She also found herself waiting an hour at the bookstore for her mother to pick out a sweatshirt, an experience she hopes won't repeat during the upcoming events.
As Spring Break and Easter Break approach, more students are seeking temporary parking passes on campus, adding to the campus's vibrant atmosphere. The Sophomore Semi-Formal event, priced at $20, promises to be another exciting addition to the Holy Cross calendar.
