Poland Election Drama: Karol Nawrocki Clutches Close Victory Over Rafal Trzaskowski

Heated Polish Election: Nationalist Candidate Nawrocki Leads over Pro-European Trzaskowski in Public Opinion Surveys - Nationalist candidate Nawrocki gains an edge in the Polish election over Trzaskowski, who advocates for a pro-European stance.

In a nail-biting finish, Sunday evening polls projected Karol Nawrocki, the right-wing candidate endorsed by the Law and Justice party (PiS), to edge out pro-European centrist Rafal Trzaskowski with a razor-thin margin of 0.6 percentage points, 50.7% to 49.3%.

However, the initial projections had Trzaskowski leading by a slim 0.6 percentage points, 50.3% to 49.7%. This back-and-forth seesaw battle is a testament to the thrilling unpredictability of the election.

Voter turnout witnessed a notable increase from the 2020 election, climbing to 72.8% compared to 68.2% previously. Remarkably, German expats in Poland showed an unusually high registration rate of 115,000 for the 2022 election, as opposed to approximately 70,000 in 2020, according to the Polish embassy in Berlin.

As the presidential election gathers momentum, it is seen as a pivotal moment not just for Poland but for Europe as a whole. A Trzaskowski victory would offer a boost to Prime Minister Donald Tusk's reforms, which stalled under the previous right-wing nationalist President, Andrzej Duda. Conversely, a Nawrocki win could potentially question Poland's unwavering support for Ukraine, raising the specter of new parliamentary elections and strained relationships with the European Union.

A Nawrocki presidency could block progressive government plans regarding abortion and LGBTQ rights and lead to new tensions with Brussels concerning the rule of law. On the other hand, Trzaskowski, a seasoned politician, aims to liberalize abortion policies and champion the rights of sexual minorities in the largely Catholic country.

In stark contrast, 42-year-old political newcomer Nawrocki ran his campaign with the slogan "Poland first." Accusing Ukrainian refugees living in Poland of self-enrichment at the expense of the country, he also takes issue with Ukraine's NATO membership. During his May campaign, Nawrocki secured a meeting with former US President Donald Trump in Washington, who publicly predicted his victory, while some members of the ruling coalition accused Trump of interfering in the election.

Notable figures like US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem showed support for Nawrocki during her visit to Poland, expressing her conviction that he will become the next president. Looking towards Germany, Nawrocki advocates for tighter border controls and reparations from the federal government for war-related damages.

Malgorzata Wojciechowska, a voter, expressed hope for a Trzaskowski win, stating, "Women in Poland do not yet enjoy the same rights as women in other European countries." She believed a Trzaskowski victory would drive the debate on abortion, allowing Poland to ultimately become a free and open nation.

Among supporters of Nawrocki is Lila Chojecka, a pensioner from Warsaw, who voiced her fervent support for the candidate, stating, "Catholic values are important to me. I know he shares them." Monika Rosa, an MP and member of the Trzaskowski campaign initiative "Women with Trzaskowski," welcomed the high voter turnout of 72.8% as an "extraordinary" political mobilization of women, although she awaited the final results before reacting to the initial euphoria.
