🔥 Breaking Record in Style! 🔥

Berlin (dpa/bb) - In an electrifying display of consistency and resilience, Martin Zwicker of Berliner HC has made history as the new record holder in field hockey for Germany. The 336th international match he played against Australia, held at the Ernst-Reuter-Sportfeld on Wednesday, broke the previous record held by Matthias Witthaus.

Overwhelmed yet elated, the 38-year-old Zwicker shared his thoughts, "The number is quite remarkable. To accomplished this at home, surrounded by loved ones—my girlfriend, family, and friends—makes it a truly special occasion." His World Cup win with the team in 2023, silver and bronze medals at the Olympics in Paris 2024 and Rio de Janeiro 2016, and European championship in 2013, along with the German championship with Berliner HC in 2012, are testaments to his exceptional skillset and dedication to the sport.

The captain, Mats Grambusch, could hardly contain his admiration, "To play that many international matches, and maintain the same level of passion, determination, and down-to-earth attitude? That's quite phenomenal. He doesn't need the limelight." Zwicker echoed his sentiments, "I've never been one to relish attention. I appreciate it, though." Born in Köthen, Zwicker is the oldest player in the squad, with Gonzalo Peillat and Grambusch following closely at 32. "His life experiences are vast, but he easily connects with the younger players," Grambusch said.

As the elder statesman, Zwicker has already confirmed his participation in the Bundestrainer for the World Cup in summer 2026. When asked why he keeps pushing himself, Zwicker replied, "I'm the kind of person who values commitment and keeps his promises, win or lose." Despite Berliner HC's relegation to the second league, Zwicker remains steadfast, "We'll analyze last season and make some decisions. Berliner HC is still my top priority."
