National Geographic's new show 'Sally' premieres on Monday, June 16. Stream it on Hulu and Disney+.
In the world of space exploration, few names resonate as profoundly as Sally Ride, the first American woman to journey to the cosmos. A new documentary, SALLY, produced by National Geographic Documentary Films, pays tribute to this trailblazing astronaut.
Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Cristina Costantini, SALLY premieres on National Geographic on Monday, June 16, at 9/8c. The film will also be available to stream globally the next day on Disney+ and Hulu, timed to the anniversary of Sally Ride's spaceflight, which took place on June 18, 1983.
Costantini, who got her start as an award-winning investigative journalist, covering detention centers, immigration, and the opioid crisis, was drawn to telling the story of a trailblazing woman fighting for respect in a male-dominated world. The film's writers are Tom Maroney and Costantini herself.
The documentary honours not only Ride's groundbreaking career but also her unique and transformative personal story. SALLY shares the story of Ride's bond with her longtime partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, with new detail and insight never shared before. O'Shaughnessy, who reveals their story for the first time after Ride's passing, describes her as passionate, private, ambitious, brave, funny, loyal, comfortable in her own skin, and full of love.
The film features interviews with Billie Jean King, Anna Fisher, Kathy Sullivan, John Fabian, and Steve Hawley, offering a comprehensive look at Ride's life and legacy. SALLY world premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and was awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Feature Film Prize.
Executive producers for the film include Liz Garbus, Tam O'Shaughnessy, Kate Barry, Mala Chapple, Tom Maroney, Carolyn Bernstein, Bill and Ruth Ann Harnisch. SALLY is a Story Syndicate production in association with Muck Media.
Critics have praised SALLY as "an overwhelming triumph," "inspiring," and "long overdue." If you're looking for a film that celebrates resilience, bravery, and the power of love, SALLY is a must-watch.
