National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) leader tenders resignation, verified by the Palace

In a surprising turn of events, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime Santiago has tendered his resignation, citing an "orchestrated move to blacken his reputation" by unnamed detractors with "sinister interests" aiming for his position.

Santiago's resignation, confirmed by Malacanang on Saturday, comes after his courtesy resignation in May 2025, following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive for agency heads to vacate their posts. However, the reason for his resignation was not disclosed at the time.

The NBI chief's resignation letter, dated Aug. 15, 2025, was shared with the media over the weekend. In it, Santiago highlighted his efforts to purge corrupt individuals within the agency, which he believed triggered opposition against him. He stated that his resignation is "irrevocable" and effective immediately upon the appointment of his replacement, to avoid disruption to the agency’s operations.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed Santiago's resignation in a text message but did not provide a comment from the President regarding the matter. President Marcos Jr. has not yet accepted Santiago's resignation, and until a replacement is named, Santiago is to remain in office to ensure continuity of operations.

The Department of Justice has assured the public that the NBI's work will continue uninterrupted, stating that no shortlist of candidates has been drawn up yet.

Santiago's resignation comes amid allegations of attempts to besmirch his reputation, which he believes are driven by those with sinister intentions. He has served as the NBI chief since June 2024, appointed by President Marcos Jr. himself.
