RIP Vikram Gaikwad: A Master Craftsman in Bollywood Makeup
Saying a heartfelt farewell to the epicurean of Indian cinema's makeup department, Aamir Khan pens a poignant tribute on Instagram, "Bid adieu to the legendary makeup artist Vikram Gaikwad – a true virtuoso who graced films like Dangal, PK, Rang De Basanti and numerous others. His artistry brought countless unforgettable characters to life on the silver screen. We'll miss you, Dada."
Vikram Gaikwad, the National Award-winning makeup artist, passed away at 61 in Mumbai on May 10. The silver screen maestro left an indelible mark on Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and South Indian films such as 83, Uri: The Surgical Strike, Shakuntala Devi, Sanju, Dangal, PK, 3 Idiots, Omkara, Balgandharva, Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, Ponniyin Selvan, and O Kadhal Kanmani, to name a few.
Varun Dhawan, who collaborated with Gaikwad on Badlapur, payed tribute by writing on his Instagram Stories, "Thank you, Vikram Gaikwad, for the exceptional detail that went into crafting my look. A genuine magician who pushed Indian cinema toward greatness. Farewell, Dada."
Younger brother of the deceased, Dr Prasanna Paranjpe, revealed to PTI that Gaikwad was admitted to Hiranandani Hospital in Powai three days prior due to blood pressure issues. He passed away on May 10 at around 8:30 am. Gaikwad was stable during his hospitalization, and the family was not expecting his departure so soon.
Vikram Gaikwad was a three-time recipient of the National Award for Best Make-up, for his work in the Bengali film Moner Manush (2010), The Dirty Picture and Marathi movie Balgandharva (2011), and Jaatishwar (2014) [1].
